Strong safety leaders do more than enforce rules—they influence behaviors, mindsets, and lasting cultural change. This interactive workshop introduces the foundations of influential leadership and how they directly affect safety performance. Participants will explore the eight essential elements of effective influencer conversations, with practical suggestions and examples for applying them in real-world situations. Key leadership practices such as firsthand observation, strategic foresight, and embracing challenges as opportunities will be emphasized. With a mix of discussion and brief hands-on activities, attendees will leave with actionable skills to lead safety from a position of influence, not Authority.
Objectives:
- Describe the foundational leadership traits that influence safety performance
- .Explain the eight keys to effective influencer conversations when leading safety change.
- Illustrate how observation, foresight, and problem-solving contribute to proactive safety
leadership. - Apply strategies for using conversations to engage employees and drive performance
improvement. - Discuss how to reframe challenges as opportunities to strengthen safety culture.
Presenter:
Earl H. Blair, Ph.D., CSP, FASSP, is an ASSP Fellow, adjunct professor of safety management at Indiana University, and president of Blair International LLC. He is an award-winning author and teacher. Prior to teaching, Blair worked as a safety professional in various industries and led two of the earliest industrial sites in the U.S. into OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs Star sites. As a consultant, Blair conducts safety training and delivers keynote presentations and workshops for corporations and safety professionals throughout the U.S. and internationally. In 2018, Blair was recognized with the BLR Lifetime Achievement in Safety Award. He is a professional member of ASSP’s Central Indiana Chapter and a member of the Society’s Consultants Practice Specialty.
